Vamos à Praia

On a beautiful sunny Saturday with mid-60s (F) temps, I took a cheap Uber ride out to the ocean, where I visited Praia Grande (big beach) and then walked up and over to Praia das Maçãs, another nice beach. Both were strangely empty on such a nice Saturday afternoon. I guess the Portuguese are like Floridians – they think the 60s are too chilly, even in pure sunlight.

Anyway, it was a great day for a nap on the sand, a delicious lunch by the ocean, and a walk along a cliff-side path. It was welcomed relaxation, especially before heading to loud and busy Lisbon for four nights.

See the paragliders? They would eventually come down and land on the sand.
Beetroot and goat cheese risotto after a fish soup and before an affogato. A nice splurge for a change.

When I visited a craft brewery in Sintra, I ordered a large stout beer, and the server asked whether I wanted it to take away or stay in. I was puzzled by the question and answered that I’d drink there. Later, some Americans came in and were asked the same question, and they asked if take away meant that they could drink it in the streets, and the server said yes, that that’s allowed everywhere in Portugal. The difference for the server is therefore whether he pours the beer into a plastic cup or a glass. Cool!

Side note: Portugal is the world’s largest cork producer, providing about half of the supply. Souvenir shops sell various products made of cork – I bought a bookmark.

Today’s dad joke: In the Midwestern US, what does a person do to celebrate when they manage to refrain from drinking sugary soda for a week?

They cork the pop!

Today’s limerick:

Portugal offers beer for take away
Pint in hand while walking for a good day
Wandering the street with ale
Might make one hearty and hale
But if lazy make your order to stay.

Today’s travel quote:

People travel to faraway places to watch, in fascination, the kind of people they ignore at home.

  1. Pics, anecdotes, limericks, dad jokes, and quotes. Enjoying your posts, Scott! Keep ‘em coming!

  2. The idea of beer to take away is reminiscent of the “social district” concept now becoming popular in a number of NC cities. The beaches remind me of some California coastline.

    1. I want to learn more about the social district concept! Yes, a Californian recently told me that Portugal’s coastline reminded him of California’s.
