Uncommonplace

One of the aspects of Zagreb I enjoy is that it is so quirky, especially for being in Croatia, known for being a fairly conservative and traditional place. It’s as if most Croatian artists move to Zagreb (they probably do).

The following brochure is an example of the kind of surprising things you can find here. The city has a great tourist information office, where I found this brochure for a DIY quest. Speaking of that, in really touristy cities like Krakow and Budapest, there are a bunch of “fake” tourist offices that are there just to try to sell you tours they get kickbacks from. And in these cities there are also a million cheesy souvenir shops, while in Zagreb most of the few souvenir stores sell higher-class goods, often handmade.

One never knows who will show up at the market:

I’ve mentioned this before on Mezera Rok, but Zagreb is full of unique museums covering diverse topics such as broken relationships, technology for the blind, mushrooms, cannabis, illusions, hangovers, the 80s, and more. Sounds like a wild ride! Maybe one should visit these in a particular sequence… Start with the 80s and end with broken relationships, perhaps? With some mushrooms, illusions, cannabis, blindness, and hangovers in between?

Today’s limerick:

Zagreb is a city of the quirky
Origins of this are a bit murky
Tour at least one museum
When in town you must see 'em
The switch in topics feels rather jerky.

Today’s travel quote (I don’t advocate this for forests, just metaphorically):

Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.

Ralph Waldo Emerson
